Senior Scientist I – Fermentation

We have a very exciting opportunity to join our Fermentation Department. The successful candidate must be self-motivated, enthusiastic, and passionate about science. It is essential that the candidate demonstrates evidence of interdisciplinary team skills and can work collaboratively with others to reach project deadlines whilst being flexible, proactive, and able to multi-task effectively to meet the demands of different work activities. The candidate must have high attention to experimental detail and the ability to carefully record and present methods and results. Excellent written skills and detailed report writing is imperative to this role alongside a high level of communication and presentation skills.   The successful candidate will need a willingness to adapt and learn, and in time, will be expected to line manage more junior colleagues.

The successful candidate will be embedded within a dynamic, sociable team in a lab-based role with flexible working hours. The role will be based at the Roslin Innovation Centre where there are regular bus links to the City Centre, free on-site parking, an on-site gym, on-site childcare, and several on-site cafes – the perfect setting to meet colleagues over a coffee in view of the beautiful Pentland Hills.

Skills/Experience

The candidate will have:

  • A PhD in Fermentation Biotechnology (or related field) with at least 1 year of industrial work experience or an equivalent graduate degree with at least 3 years industrial experience.
  • Excellent technical knowledge and practical experience in running, optimising and troubleshooting fermentations.
  • Proven ability to work both independently, and as part of a team.
  • Ability to generate new ideas and deliver innovative approaches to increase workplace productivity.
  • The candidate must be able to multitask extremely well and have excellent attention to detail.
  • Excellent numeracy skills and a strong problem-solving ability.
  • Excellent organisational skills and a flexible hard working approach are key attributes for this position.
  • Excellent formal communication skills; both oral and written

Other Desirable Skills (Not Essential) include:

  • Practical fermentation experience in more than one type of microorganism
  • Experience of fermentation scale up
  • Mammalian cell culture experience
  • Experience in using a Quality Management System (SOP’s, RA’s etc)
  • Practical experience or at least a working knowledge of GMP
  • Systematic approaches to experimental design and process optimisation
  • Basic knowledge of molecular biology, and analytical chemistry
  • Ability to articulate technical information to a wider audience
  • Line and project management experience
